On December 25, 2009, a new Medic 71 was placed into service.  The older vehicle, a 2004 Ford Explorer, was traded in for a 2010 Jeep Wrangler.  The Explorer was beginning to become problematic with the heavy-duty use that it sees, and was going to be in need of costly repairs in the near future if left in-service.  Eight other vehicles were looked at as options to replace it, and the Jeep turned out to be of the lesser expensive options.  To replace the ‘04 Explorer with a new Explorer would have cost almost $5,000 more than the Jeep.  Another consideration with the selection of the Jeep is the terrain and weather that we have in our response area, which includes heavy snowfall, forest service roads and occasional off-road use.  With it’s capabilities, we can rest assured that we can access patients in such difficult terrain when the need arises.  M71 is equipped with low-profile LED emergency lighting, an ALS medical kit, oxygen / resuscitation equipment, a suction unit and a full-feature Zoll cardiac monitor / defibrillator.
